Hawk Traps
Hawk traps have a singular purpose, which is to catch eagles, falcons and hawks in the wild so they can be tamed and used for practicing the art of falconry. Once captured, the young bird can be trained using the proven methods of the art and made to follow the falconer's commands. Older birds can also be caught, but are considerably harder to train.
It is best to trap birds that are less than a year old. One can tell the age partly by the bird's plumage. Many young birds die within their first year of life, so this method does not seem to diminish the population of wild birds of prey. Older birds are known as haggards, and are best avoided when using hawk traps for this purpose.
Mike's Falconry Supplies Offers Many Sizes of Hawk Traps
It is important to select a trap that is sized appropriately for the kind of bird being trapped. For example, Mike's Falconry Supplies offers a model that is sized to catch birds from the size of a cooper up to that of a red-tailed hawk. It is made of heavy-duty materials that can a beating out in the field. The trap essentially catches the bird by the ankle as it goes for the bait.
Mike's Falconry Supplies has many hawk traps in addition to a wide range of other supplies such as radio-tracking receivers and transmitters, gloves, both block and swivel perches and leather goods. Contact Mike's at mikes@mikesfalconry.com for further information on hawk traps.
