Falconry Perches

Falconry perches are a necessary component for the training and upkeep of birds of prey that are used for falconry purposes. Perches emulate the natural environment for the bird and are used in the bird's mews. A mews is the technical name for the bird's chambers, where it rests when it is not being used for hunting or training.

Perches vary depending on the kind of bird being employed for falconry. Eagles, hawks and falcons are all used for falconry and stand on their feet in different ways. Falcons are members of the longwing family of birds of prey, and use what is known as a block perch. They stand with their feet flat on top of the perch. Hawks stand so that their talons wrap around their perches. In their cases, a bow or round perch is used.

Block perches have a material that is set on top of the perch for the bird to stand upon. In the case of the block perch sold by Mike's Falconry Supplies, this material is green long-leafed Astroturf that is removable for easy cleaning. The rest of the perch is typically made of stainless steel, and has a ring to which the leash or jesse is tied.
